All swimming pools & spas in the
United States MUST be in Compliance with On December 19, 2007, President George W. Bush signed into Federal Law, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007. The law is named from the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III. In 2002 at the age of seven, Graeme Baker died in a spa after the powerful suction of a drain entrapped her underwater. The new law is intended to increase the safety of swimming pools and spas by motivating states to pass laws that incorporate layers of protection in order to help prevent drowning, drain entrapment and hair entanglements. Enforced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the law dictates that "All Public pools and spas must comply by December 19, 2008." All pool and spa Main Drains and Suction Outlets must have compliant covers embossed with "ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007". This code has brought world-wide attention, and commercial pools are encouraged to contact their local health department for most up-to-date information.
