All swimming pools & spas in the
United States MUST be in Compliance with President George W. Bush signed into Federal Law, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007 on December 19, 2007. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007 is named for the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III. In 2002 at the age of seven, Graeme Baker died in a spa after the powerful suction of a drain entrapped her underwater. The new law is intended to increase the safety of swimming pools and spas by motivating states to pass laws that incorporate layers of protection in order to help prevent drowning, drain entrapment and hair entanglements. Enforced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the law dictates that "All Public pools and spas must comply by December 19, 2008." All pool and spa Main Drains and Suction Outlets must have compliant covers embossed with "ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007". This standard not only includes main drain covers, but also all suction fittings.

(i.e. - Some states require the GPMs rated at 1-1/2' per second; other states do
not. Some states prefer different drain covers. To the best of our
knowledge, the drain covers listed above are approved nationwide. Check
with your local health dept codes. This is a new, and very complex law.
Some pools will require the simple replacement of the cover. Other
facilities may need additional work in order to be VGB Compliant.
